Check this video out.  Not only is this great video of the Wildflower finish last weekend but it is also great video footage of how to run downhill.  Obviously, not many of us can run that fast at the end of a half ironman.  However, you can emulate the technique as it is very efficient.

Notice how the toes never rise very high and how the foot strike is almost always under the body.  Not in front of it.  A number of runner’s have problems with downhills since they tend to exaggerate their heel strike.  This causes a large eccentric pull on muscles like the tibialis anterior (shin) and is a big reason a number of runner’s end up with shin splints.  So, work on less heel striking and more landing underneath your body.
