Ah, summer time!  No arm warmers, no jackets, no botties and no gloves.  Gotta love it.

You should become used to the heat before race day unless you plan to avoid hot races.  A great way to speed up your acclimation to the heat is to drink right after a hot workout.  Be sure to drink about a full water bottle (preferably big size bottle = 700ml) filled with water with a touch of salt or use a drink like Gatorade.

Drink this fluid immediately after a big sweat and it will get your body to adapt to the heat quicker.  Subsequently, you will feel better in future workouts this summer.  The salt not only helps replace salt lost in sweat but it also helps you absorb more of that water by raising the salt concentration in your blood.  If your blood all of sudden gets too “watery” then that signals the kidney to get rid of it thus lowering the amount of water than can be absorbed by cells throughout your body.

So, this summer, don’t avoid the heat if you are doing a race that could be hot.  In other words, prepare for the race by training in race-like conditions.  If you have a cool spell then dress extra warm to simulate hot conditions.  Or, jump in the sauna.  The sauna works wonders especially if you are coming out of winter but you are racing somewhere hot.  But, that is another story for another time.
